It made us laugh at ourselves and Jon's chihuahua. We dropped in the quality audio segments you're used to. We added some sweet titles and no we're famous! Oh yeah, we also talked about movies too ...

SUMMMER BLOCKBUSTERS NEED âTRANSFORMERâ-ATION

My favorite local theater boasts 21 screens. Usually thereâs a different film on every one. Not so the other night when the big three âthirdsâ (Shrek 3, Spidey 3 and Pirates 3) gobbled up all the available projectors leaving only a couple of chick flicks to choose from.

Movie companies wonât bother trying to nudge their smaller films into the release schedule when juggernauts like these are slated â but so far the âblockbustersâ do not impress me.

If youâve seen Shrek and Shrek 2, youâve seen Shrek 3. Though I must congratulate director Chris Miller for making this installment less offensive to the youngsters with fewer innuendo, the story is just not that engaging and the same moral is toldâ yawn.

And speaking of yawning, Spiderman 3 put me to sleep twice before I could make it though to the credits. I remember this though, Spidey gets infected by a weird alien substance that turns him into a superhero version of John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever. By the way, Kirsten Dunst, donât look for this film to launch your singing career! Puh-Leese! The best parts were the credits and the cool effects on Sandman. Thomas Haden Church makes a terrible actor (as always) but heâs a likeable bad-guy/good-guy. Even George Lucas said, âItâs a silly film.â

And shiver-me-ticketstubs, Pirates 3 takes a simple story and completely convolutes it much like the Matrix franchise did with their chapters two and three. Take out the swashbuckling and this 2 hour, 40 minute long movie (yes, pack a lunch) would fit between Wheel Of Fortune and your evening news. Disney added lots of new pirates and cut the plot. Remember how gypped you felt when you realized part two was only leading you to part three? Well, now part three doesnât deliver either. They owe you $20 for both of them. I guess thatâs what happens when you base a three-installment movie on an amusement park ride!

IS THERE ANY HOPE????

Well, there are some more âthirdsâ coming out later this year. Rush Hour Three, Bourne Ultimatum (Three), and Oceans 13 (which is actually Three â get your calculator out for that one) will arrive in due time, but the film I canât wait to see is â TRANSFORMERS.

Any child of the 80âs remembers these awesome toys we saved up weeks of allowance to buy. And now thereâs a full feature length movie with Decepticons as wicked looking as we imagined them as kids. Transformers opens on July 4th and Iâm looking for fireworks! But itâs going to be too intense for the kiddies â so whatâs a parent to do?

GO SEE LIVE THEATER!

The Theater Of The Stars has a delicious line-up of classic musicals and new favorites all year long. This is the year to become a season ticket holder. Youâll guarantee yourself a memorable night out on the town at least once a month. Check it out at www.theaterofthestars.com

He calls on all folks who want more GOOD QUALITY FAMILY FRIENDLY movies in theaters to go put their money where there mouth is! Round up all your pals and find a place showing it to show movie house managers what sells.
www.hiddensecrets-themovie.com (interview is 18 minutes long) John also talked about his independent film, Collier And Company, which was a throw back to The Dukes of Hazzard but without the smut of the recent remake.

DISNEY'S HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL ON STAGE

Disneyâs High School Musical at The Fabulous Fox

The runaway hit MADE-FOR-TV movie is now a full stage show that is currently touring America. Itâs first stop was here in Atlanta at the Fabulous Fox theatre and film crews were on hand for audience reaction.

Your pre-teen will be standing in the aisles singing and dancing â but hey, âWeâre All In This Togetherâ arenât we? I found the adaptation quite true to the script, though the younger audience members (like my 6 year old) may not understand why the songs donât sound EXACTLY like the DVD. There are two new songs added to the stage show. They arenât necessary to make the story work, but they do fill out the show a bit more and will no doubt bolster soundtrack sales.

The tour also features local talent in each city stop. In Atlantaâs case, some dancers and a marching band brought in friends and family whooping and hollering at the appropriate entrances.

The choreography was outstanding and the set was very inventive. The lighting was great â but there were quite a few issues with sound (dropped opening lines and a horrid problem with the wireless mic system at the close of the show) but by the time you get there â those bugs will no doubt be worked out.

I have to be honest here â the character of Ryan (the sidekick, vice president of the drama club and twin brother of the self-absorbed conniving Sharpei) makes a slight romantic advance and later a school-girl type reaction to the main character, Troy. Any audience member above age 10 will understand whatâs going on here â Ryan obviously identifies himself as a homosexual. This is so totally unnecessary and at Disneyâs best possible intentions (an attempt to âreach outâ to misfit pre-teens) it was enough to bother me immensely. If that wouldnât bother you â youâre in for a 2 hour blast.

All-in-all the show was a lot of fun and based on (target) audience reaction, a huge HIT! It gets 3.5 out of 4 stubs from me!

HERE IT IS! MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!

A thrill ride through the Jungles of Central America, a portrait of one family and their dedication to each other, a story of one man learning not to live in fear. Apocalypto is all of this and more from Touchstone pictures, director Mel Gibson and writers Mel Gibson and Farhad Safinia. The story centers around Jaguar Paw a young father and a brave hunter who lives in an idyllic setting with his wife, father and the rest of his extended âfamilyâ. They live in the jungle with their own little community that cares for each other. This beautiful setting is rudely interrupted by a group of Mayan hunters who have come to enslave this tiny village and they will do so by any means necessary. We follow Jaguar Paw and his village as they are taken from their homeland through the jungles to the center of Mayan civilization. If the beginning of the movie looked like the Garden of Eden then the Mayan city must surely be hell. As they drag the prisoners to their ultimate fate you will see human sacrifice, people worshipping strange gods, and all sorts of bizarre behaviour. This movie also presents several different possibilities for the end of the Mayan empire several of which are saved for the last few frames of the movie. Apocalypto is the most powerful movie I have seen all year and as you see Jaguar Paw try to get back to rescue his very pregnant wife and his son you canât helped be moved by his love of his family. Apocalypto is also filled with generous amounts of blood and gore, so if you were bothered by Braveheart or The Passion of the Christ then this movie is probably worse than either one of those, so stay away. If that doesnât bother you then you are in for an exciting adventure. The intensity in this movie is off the charts and it doesnât let up until the very end. Forget about all the naysayers who want to get rid of Mel Gibson because of The Passion of the Christ and his drunken rants, Apocalypto is the real deal, powerful and exciting moviemaking with a message. 4 stubs.

CASINO ROYALE: (3.5 Stubs) - New Bond Ney Sayers SHUT UP. Daniel Craig does an outstanding job at this raw first installment in the franchise.

CRANK: (2.5 Stubs) - About 90 minutes longer than it needed to be. This should have been an episode of 24.

DEJA VU: (3 Stubs) - Nicely done Mr. Washington. Time travel is always a bit far fetched - especially if the federal gov't is invovled. But the twists are pretty cool on this one.

THE GUARDIAN: (3 Stubs) - Finally Kevin Costner changes his voice tone and ACTS! Not a bad film.

HAPPY FEET: (3.5 Stubs for Adults / 2.5 Stubs for Kids) - PENGUINS LOVE THE 80's - but the kids weren't there so the songs don't seem as fun. Also the subtext of tolerance in the face of fundamentalism is really frustrating.

THE ILLUSIONIST: (3 Stubs) - Jon thought this one was too slow. Brian liked it. Ed Norton does a good job.

LITTLE MAN: (.25 Stubs) - Don't Bother ... Really ... Please Save Your Time.

PIRATES II: (3 Stubs) - Lots of Good action and Jack Sparrow Stammering but frustrating ending. They should have titled it... "Stock Option for Part Three"

STRANGER THAN FICTION: (3 Stubs) - Great smart story sort of "Truman Show"-esque. However, you won't find any resemblance to prior Will Ferrell Roles.

TENACIOUS D and THE PICK OF DESTINY: (1.5 Stubs) - If you like to see 40 year old men act like 14 year olds and cuss like sailors - this is the movie for you. If you'd prefer something a bit more intellegent don't waste your time.

NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS in 3D: (3 Stubs) - More creepy Tim Burton but this time IN YOUR FACE.

TURISTAS: (3 Stubs) A FIRST FOR JON... Giving a good review to a horror film. This went sparing on the gore, had a plausable story and decent acting. Negatives, unnecessary nudity and a clipped ending (needed about 10 more minutes to wrap things up).

JUMPING THE STUBS ... I MEAN SHARK

Thanks to a tip by one of our fans, The Lovely Miss Crystal, We check out the site www.jumptheshark.com. It turns out when a show starts to lose it's momentum often times ridiculous plot elements will be inserted by the producers to stimulate more intrest. Such is the case with our dear Fonzie pictured here - who decided to water ski over some vicious sharks to get more ratings. We figured the same applied to movies that couldn't tell a story well so we reviewed a few of them. In the process we jumped the shark ourselves : ) ENJOY

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway (At The Fabulous Fox)

Over the decades, there have been dozens of stage to screen adaptations that have nestled quite nicely in the hearts of movie lovers. Hits include, The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, and Rent.

But occasionally the trend reverses with much success. Though no LION KING, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS accomplishes this very well. And is playing at The Fabulous Fox through November 5th.

In case you missed the film (rent it! Itâs hilarious), Lawrence Jameson plays a debonair conman on the Riviera. He likes the big score. But his success is stymied a bit when he encounters small change con man, Freddie who says heâs heard of Jamesonâs success and wants to learn from the master.

Though Jameson is flattered by Freddieâs admiration at first, their cons overlap at times which leads to a challenge to con $50,000 out of the lovely miss Christine Colgate. In the end, the truism you canât con a conmanâ is proven false as Freddie and Jameson are taken to the cleaners by the elusive and infamous con artist, âThe Jackal.â But in the process they become great friends.

The musical numbers for this song are hilarious and feature a potpourri of musical styles. The sets, though somewhat minimal in comparison to Les Miserable, work quite nicely and are very inventive. The dance numbers are as grand as you would expect on the Riviera.

This is A COMEDY. If youâre looking for your heart to be swept away in a Rogers and Hammerstein fashion, look elsewhere. But if you want a good laugh and a good time, donât miss the stage adaptation of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.

There are a lot of sexual themes and some course language, so keep the kiddies at bay.

On DVD: DUMA - FAMILY FREINDLY, GREAT STORY

It's movie night at home with the kids. Ready for something that's not sarcastic, scatological, hyper animated, or otherwise corrosive to the souls of your kids - that they'll WATCH. Here's one. DUMA. Imagine a modern day Old Yeller set in africa and it's a cat instead of a golden retriever. Uhmmm, a very large cat - a Cheetah to be specific. Hope Davis (The Weather Man) plays mom and Campbell Scott (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) plays Dad but the real hero is Xan (short for Alexander) played by Alex Michaeletos in his first role ever. When Duma (Swahili word for Cheetah) grows too old for domestic life Xan sets out on a journey to return him to the area he was found. He travels across the African desert and wilderness with the help of his running man companion, Ripkuna (Eamonn Walker). In the process they learn to survive the journey they need each other. Both my 5 year old and 11 year old were glued to the screen as the love relationship between man and beast and man and man was laid out. As a bonus, the filming has moments reminiscent of National Geographic's wild kingdom. Go rent DUMA and spend some time remembering how good it is to have each other.

THE BLACK DAHLIA, more black than dahlia.

Two 1940's LA cops (Bucky Bleichert played by Josh Hartnett and Lee Blanchard played by Aaron Eckhart) investigate the brutal death of aspiring actress Elizabeth Short. The investigation leads to an uncovering of police corruption and suspicion of the Hollywood producer Emmet Linscott (John Kavanagh) largely because Short is a 'dead ringer' (pun intended) for Linscott's daughter Madeleine (Hillary Swank).

Director, Brian De Palma (Mission Impossible, The Untouchables) presents a period piece both in set, costume, make-up AND film style. The movie comes off like a 1940's gangster movie with quirky fight scenes, 40's colloquialisms and crude scene transitions. At times I was wishing it was shot in Black and White. De Palma will no doubt take home some recognition for this film as cinemaphiles note the obvious return to 'film making'. The intent was not lost on me and I found it a refreshing approach juxtaposed to it's box office rival in both release date and plot, Hollywoodland. The acting is believable for the style of film and never waviers from it. But there is the matter of the script.

Based on the Novel by James Ellroy, the screenplay adaptation comes courtesy of Josh Friedman who's only other big screen works are War of The Worlds (2005) and Chain Reaction (1996) - neither of which gathered much support from critics. It's unlikely The Black Dahlia will change matters. The story was quite simply too convoluted and too long. Who-dun-it is usually a euphemism for a crime drama - in this case it's what the audience is saying when they're leaving the theatre.

The story paints a picture of 1940's Hollywood that will assuredly surprise a few. Lesbianism, elicit porn films and gruesome murder are themes and images that stand in stark contrast to the glamour and luxury of these characters. Obviously the title communicates that same contrast (in case you didn't know, a Dahlia is a flower - not many of which are BLACK).

I give it 3 out of 4 stubs. Not quite as enjoyable of a tale as Hollywoodland - most assuredly not told as well - but much is made up for in the film and directing technique employed by De Palma.

FACING THE GIANTS

GRAB FIVE SMOOTH MILK DUDS AND A TWIZZLER SLING SHOT AND GET READY FOR FACING THE GIANTS!

The best human drama to hit theatres this year is cleverly disguised as a sports genre flick. FACING THE GIANTS is without a doubt, (and to be cliche), THE MUST SEE film of the year.

Coach Grant Taylor is a hard-working and dedicated football coach at a small Christian school in GA. He's underpaid, under-appreciated and unfortunately, under-successful. Five losing seasons in a row bring more than just L's on the tally sheet. He loses his star players, his support from parents, and his self esteem. And though he has a strong relationship with his wife, Brooke, their inability to have children and meager income is making matters hard at home.

After three losses in a row to begin his 6th season, and when he hears of a plot to have him removed, Taylor comes to the end of himself. There he finds a God who shows up in the hard times and SHOWS OUT when others praise Him.

A new team philosophy brings about dramatic transformation on and off the football field and through a series of miraculous events, Taylor and those around him learn that with God, anything is possible.

You will cheer, cry, grieve, laugh, and be so glad you came to see Facing The Giants. It's the cheapest therapy you can get and is 10 times more effective.

Can I say this emphatically enough? GO SEE THIS FILM. TAKE YOUR FAMILY TO THIS FILM. TAKE YOUR FRIENDS TO THIS FILM. In a world that is sarcastic, cynical, jaded and bruised from politics, porn and petty people, FACING THE GIANTS returns our hearts to something bigger than ourselves. This is NOT A FOOTBALL FILM though the sports scenes are great. This is a film that opens the heart and offers hope to the hurting.

There's another story that must be told as well. The volunteer cast and crew of Facing The Giants saw their premise proven time and again as this film has gone from an idea in the heads of producers Alex and Stephen Kendrick to a distribution to 400 screens on September 29th. For more info on this amazing story, visit their website at www.facingthegiants.com

On a scale of 0 to 4 stubs, I give it a 10! FIRST DOWN!

The Lake House a Romantic Homerun!

The Lake House:

Remember when Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves were the object of every 20 somethingÃïïs affection? Ten years later the magic is finally back in The Lake House. In my opinion, Bullock hasnÃïït pulled off a great romantic performance since Ãïï95Ãïïs While You Were Sleeping or Ãïï98Ãïïs Hope Floats. Although, she did make a huge comeback dramatically with Crash Ãïï but her character was such a nasty Ãïï nobody was rooting for her. And ReevesÃïï monotonous Trinity characters have finally run amuck and he has to actually ACT.

Directed by Agrentinian Alejandro Agresti, The Lake House is a time-warped love story with Reeves and Bullock occupying the same house two years apart. They mysteriously communicate through the mailbox at the top of the hill. They seem to adjust rather quickly to the bizarre means of correspondence and it seems most of their friends arenÃïït too bothered either. This is perhaps the only ridiculous point in the movie. Once they figure out how to impact each otherÃïïs present reality Ãïï the love story ensues and the film culminates with a very romantic conclusion. The ladies in the screening room literally ÃïïgaspedÃïï when Ãï wellÃï youÃïïll have to see it. This is definitely a chick-flick extraordinaire. Guys Ãïï want to score major points? Take your lovely to see this one and fake the tears at the end.

3 out of 4 Stubs
Rated PG for some language and a disturbing image. (guy getting hit by a car)

The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Stubs

You'll Be Fast and Furiously leaving the theatre once the credits roll on this third (and hopefully FINAL) installment of the Fast and The Furious franchise. The threequel is essentially the same story as the previous two movies but on a different continent this time - Asia - Tokyo to be exact as a group of hoodlum racers with a specialty skill called 'drifting' (taking curves at high speeds and sliding the car around them) fight for honor and pink slips.

Each of the F&TF movies have employed a different director - this time it's Justin Lin (Lin has another movie due out soon, Annapolis - with James Franco and Donnie Wahlberg), certainly not the heavy hitters of Cohen or Singleton from the first two films.

Tokyo Drift drifts into the bizarre placing Lucas Black (Slingblade, Friday Night Lights) as the lead Sean Boswell who is avoiding a jail sentence by moving across the world to stay with his Father. Lucas is a ridiculously country cowboy in a world of Yakuza (Japanese Mafia) in training. Throw in the token hip hop artist, Bow Wow, playing the comedic relief as Twinkie and Universal might make their money back. (The first installment featured Ja Rule and the second had Ludacris).

The movie has four painfully disjointed philosophical moments that are supposed to bring some mental merit to the screen - but alas they come off more like stock fortune cookie lines and are overshadowed by a terrible script and even worse acting.

There are two redeeming points however - the cars are beautiful and the racing scenes are incredible. If you were watching this as a real race on the speed channel - for free - it would be entertainment. As is, every second that passes by is a reminder that you're NOT getting your money's worth.

One slightly clever moment comes at the very end when Vin Diesel does a cameo soliciting a race with Black in memory of a mutual friend. Could this tip off the audience that they're through making these movies - you should be so lucky.

For the Ticket Stubs, Jon Graham
RATING: 1 out of 4 Stubs

MPAA: Rated PG-13 for reckless and illegal behavior involving teens, violence, language and sexual content.

PRE-SCREENING: THE BREAK UP

THE BREAK-UP

By Jon Graham (www.TheTicketStubs.com)

Classic Vince Vaughn meets Neo-classic Jennifer Aniston in The Break Up. The fast talking one-liners youÃïïve come to love and expect from Vaughn are in full effect in this film directed by Peyton Reed. From the hilarious way in which Vaughn (Gary) woos Anniston (Brooke) to begin their relationship, to the rapid-fire retorts to BrookeÃïïs relational complaints Ãïï Vaughn does an amazing job in this one.

And Anniston has finally broken free from any ties to her FRIENDS series and typecasting Ãïï acting in an emotionally thorough and convincing way, youÃïïll become a fan. Her most recent attempt, Friends with Money, had much opportunity for her to develop an engaging character Ãïï she missed the opportunity by a long shot Ãïï but makes up for it here.

The bulk of the movie is a mental game between the two of them with Vaughn doing all he can to stage a hostile takeover of their shared living space Ãïï to AnnistonÃïïs attempt to get Vaughn to be jealous enough to soften and return to the relationship under her terms.

The acting in this film is SUPERB Ãïï much greater than IÃïïve come to expect from either of them separately and in the romantic comedy genre at all. The initial fight scene is so convincing Ãïï youÃïïll think they took the script from your living room last week.

As a matter of fact Ãïï the conflict got a bit uncomfortable at times. I found myself engaged in this story and wanting to jump in to help them resolve it. But their cast of friends led by Jon Favreau and Joey Lauren Adams managed to intervene at just the right times.

I was frustrated with the ending Ãïï though believable, YouÃïïll find yourself rooting for Vaughn to come to his senses and when he finally does --- well youÃïïll have to see the movie. Suffice it to say itÃïïs no Ãïïyou had me at helloÃïï moment!

For a hilarious and believable look inside conflict resolution with a slightly disappointing ending but impeccable performances from Vaughn and Anniston Ãïï take a look at THE BREAK UP.

Rated PG-13 for sexual content, some nudity and language.

OVER THE HEDGE PREVIEW - from 'The Ticket Stubs'

At an invitation only preview of OVER THE HEDGE the stubs had some face time with the likes of the crew from B98.5 FM's morning show, The folks from DreamWorks animation and a special visit from Wanda Sykes. The movie wasn't in it's complete form technically - but the story was complete from start to finish and ... completely fun!

Last year was a BIG year for DreamWorks animation as it won best animated film with Wallace and Grommet's Ware-Rabbit and before that they had a HUGE hit with Madagascar (I like to move it move it). This year proves to be no exception with the release of Over the Hedge and later in '06, FLUSHED AWAY (distinguished pet mouse meets crude sewer rat and visits the enchanting underworld) Anyway, back to OVER THE HEDGE... After a deluge of over politicized, indoctrination screenplays - dreamworks brings us nothing but 90 minutes of FUN.

Based on the comic strip by Michael Fry and T. Lewis which is probably in YOUR town's newspaper - R.J. the mischevious racoon (voiced by Bruce Willis) gets himself in quite a jam with the area HEAVY (pun intended) Grizzly Bear Vincent (voiced by Nick Nolte). As he wanders away to make up his food debt before hibernation officially ends, he meets a loving group of friends (the film referrs to them as FAMILY) lead by Verne the Turtle (Gary Shandling). Verne is prudent, patient, and hard working - endeared by "the family" and R.J. comes on the scene to teach them how to gather more food more quickly by scavenging through the human's trash. His real motivation however is to enlist an army of scavengers to help him get back to Verne with all he owes --- It's a story of trust and betrayal but In the end - they live happily ever after.

The voicing in this film is absolutely great. I would have liked to hear more from Wanda Sykes, but my personal favorites were the possum family. The film starts a bit slow as the back story unfolds and it takes a while to place Willis's (washed up cop) voice in this furry, friendly, racoon - but after about ten minutes it seems to work. Shandling comes out of semi-retirement for this work (his last work was Town & Country in 2001). But he works the Turtle role very well. The animation was outstanding for the backgrounds and main characters, but I found the humans to be a bit garrish (perhaps by design). There's a lot of laugh out loud moments and I have every confidence this will be Summer's first BIG animated hit.

Only two complaints: 1. The over emphasis on FAMILY among this group of various family descriptions (one family of four, two solos, one father/daughter) could be twisted into some "it takes a village to raise a porcupine" concept or perhaps some throwback to the commune days in California in the 70's - but it's not so bad that you have to explain to your five year old why all those different species live together in one log. 2. The last line of the movie is a cheap shot to get the audience laughing as they stand up. The movie worked just fine for 90 minutes - no need to get all those kids repeating that one line all the way home and all summer long. The line comes from the spastic squirrell he shouts out "Look, I found my NUTS" Other than that - it's a lot of fun and a good way to get the summer started. STUBS: 3 1/2 Jon
